Learning that Works
Developing skills and knowledge for growth and change

Exemplars

Here are the sorts of topics that we have covered for our clients.

Leadership
'Servant leaders' is the current buzz phrase. But good leaders who achieve what has to be achieved and consider the needs of both the team and each individual have been doing this for years.

Good leaders lead according to the demands of the situation. They meet their goals by delivering what their organisations expect. They create high-performing teams and then rise to the challenge that managing a goal-oriented team demands. They find personal satisfaction in developing the skills and knowledge of each team member and jointly celebrate each success.

People Skills

Why is it that some people accept the challenges that life throws at them while others seem discontented with their lot? The likelihood is that those who achieve have identified for themselves a purpose in their work.

They empower themselves and others and set out to build good working relationships. They are flexible in their approach and more than achieve the results that are expected of them. They recognise and celebrate the achievement of others as well as their own. The outcome is high morale and happiness!

Presentation Skills

There are very few people who avoid making at least one formal presentation in their working lives, so the ability to present is a business 'must'. How a presenter puts forward a case directly affects the outcome. And, what surprises many of us is that success can depend more on a person's presentation skills than on the content. Plenty of practice gives people the confidence and skills to design and deliver presentations that have the power to inform and to persuade.

TRaining the trainers

With such a variety of training techniques available, it is important to understand precisely what encourages people to learn. Those who are new to training or want to improve their training skills are shown how to make their own courses effective, memorable, and fun.

The workshop can tackle both formal training courses and coaching people at work. We use both directive and non-directive styles so that people experience the value of alternative methods.

Working in Teams

Isaac Newton wrote: "For every action on one body there is an equal and opposite reaction on another body."

Of course, he wasn't referring to working in organisations - but he could have been! This workshop aims to help teams get rid of the self-imposed constraints that prevent members from succeeding. People return to work revitalised with the re-assurance that they are all working towards a common goal.

Meetings

All too often meetings, both formal and informal, aren't planned, objectives aren't set and time is wasted through inefficiencies. The result? Feelings of frustration and forgotten actions.

However, once we are able to handle the components of effective meetings - clarifying the purpose, giving time to preparation, managing the discussion, arriving at effective conclusions and writing appropriate records - we shall enjoy the stimulus of a good meeting.

Performance Management

The facts suggest that all of us are capable of exceptional effort and performance and there is no such person as a fundamentally poor performer. Why is it, then, we hear so many stories of people who are not up to the standards that are expected of them? The most likely causes tend to be a flawed organisation and poor management.

Successful managers balance concern for the well-being and development of their staff with the achievement of organisational goals. They set challenging individual objectives and give support through timely feedback.

Recruitment and Selection Interviewing

There is much to do before the selection interview is held: the job description needs to be reviewed; a relevant specification covering the required competencies must be drawn up; decisions are needed on the appropriate selection techniques; interviewers must be knowledgeable about the legal and social context of the workplace. Then at interview the recruiter must have the skills to elicit the facts about each candidate's level of knowledge, skills and attitude to work. When these challenges are met successfully, the result is a successful match between the person selected and the job vacancy. But how easy it can be for the interviewer to be misled!

Writing at Work

Business documents that are to the point and easy to read save time and meet their purpose. Our workshops focus on helping people to write persuasively, clearly and concisely because we know that sloppy writing costs money in wasted time, bad client relations and lost sales. We cover language in all its aspects - plain English, grammar, the careful choice of words and house style - and recommend ways for structuring our thoughts so that our prose meets our objectives.
